Analysis reveals that co-participants use the precise production features with which they deliver greetings to index familiarity (or lack thereof) and the state and character of their social relationships. The first research to identify the specific interactional practices with which parties constitute their face-to-face openings, this dissertation selects four of these practices for close inspection, showing how they are loci for parties’ management of affiliation and social solidarity: Co-present greetings – Elucidating the work involved in producing co-present greetings, I demonstrate that parties tailor their greetings specifically for current recipients. I use the methods of conversation analysis to examine video recorded naturally occurring encounters between English-speaking persons interacting in a wide variety of settings in the United States. Julian Assange WikileaksĮxamining phenomena critical to sustaining everyday social life, this dissertation investigates how both previously acquainted and unacquainted parties open their face-to-face interactions. I conclude this book by examining recent developments that concern Julian Assange and Wikileaks as at mid-August 2019. The next demarcated section titled ‘Witch hunt’ examines accusations that Wikileaks has engaged in gross journalistic misconduct and other transnational crimes. This section also explores victories, external criticisms and setbacks of Wikileaks over the past 13 years. Part two of this book outlines the personal and professional accomplishments of Julian Assange with reference to his Wikileaks related ventures. Part 1 of this volume titled ‘Who’ defines Assange’s narrative. For many, their basic narrative requires no introduction. This Australian citizen and his global news agency are household names. This book is about Julian Assange and Wikileaks. The use of ToE was found to be a large factor towards respondents’ judgements.

Though the results were found to be inconclusive, participants who had been on exchange seem to be better able to ascertain gender and nationality of the interlocutors. Excerpts from the IM transcripts were then shown to participants who had been or had yet to be on exchange, and they were asked to determine interlocutors’ relationships, genders, and nationalities. IM transcripts retrieved from WhatsApp Messenger, iMessage, and Facebook Messenger presented ToE used by British and Singaporean youths, and showed that Singaporeans who have lived abroad tend to use more ToE with their conversation partners, including Singaporeans. This paper investigates the effect of exposure on Singaporeans’ use and perceptions of the use of ToE in Singaporean-British instant messaging (IM) conversations in two parts. With the advent of technology and a world in which people of different cultures can now easily interact with one another, one wonders whether differences in the use of ToE in each culture may result in misunderstanding and miscommunication, as well as whether having a good understanding of different cultures aids in intercultural communication. Some use them liberally, some reserve them for intimates, and others hardly use them. The terms of endearment (ToE) used in every culture are different.
